Overview

Cook Nook is a personal recipe management tool. We collect only what we need to provide the service, we don't sell your data, and we don't use third-party advertising trackers. This policy explains what we collect, why, and how you can control it.

What We Collect

  • Account information: email address, username, optional display name and bio — provided at signup via Clerk.
  • Recipe content: recipes, ingredients, steps, and tags you create or import.
  • Import metadata: the source URL or pasted text of imports, LLM token counts, import status, and timestamps. Stored in import_jobs for 30 days, then eligible for deletion.
  • Subscription data: your billing tier (free/paid), Stripe customer ID, and subscription status. We never see or store your full credit card details — those are handled entirely by Stripe.
  • IP addresses: collected per-request for rate limiting. Not stored long-term.
  • Usage events: an append-only log recording each AI import (billing period, job ID). Retained for billing audit purposes.

What we do not collect: payment card numbers (Stripe handles these, they never touch our servers), browsing history, location data, or any information about your activity outside Cook Nook.

How We Use Your Data

  • To provide, maintain, and improve the Service.
  • To authenticate your account and protect against abuse.
  • To process subscription billing and send billing-related transactional emails (payment failed, quota warnings).
  • To send a welcome email when you sign up, and transactional notifications about your imports.
  • To track error events and diagnose issues (via Sentry, with your user ID attached to errors).

AI Processing

When you use the URL, text, or photo import modes, your recipe content is sent to OpenAI's API for extraction and structuring. This includes the raw text or image URL you provide.

Important: OpenAI does not use data submitted via the API to train its models by default (see OpenAI's API data usage policies). Manual recipe entry never involves OpenAI.

Subprocessors

We use the following third-party services to operate Cook Nook:

Clerk

Authentication, sessions, and user account management. Stores your email, name, and password hash.

Stripe

Payment processing and subscription billing. Stores your payment method and billing history. We store only your Stripe customer ID.

OpenAI

AI processing of recipe text and images for import and structuring. Data is not used to train OpenAI models via the API.

Neon

PostgreSQL database hosting (US East region). Stores all application data including your recipes, account details, and billing state.

Vercel

Application hosting and edge compute (US region by default). Processes all web requests and stores server-side logs for a short period.

Sentry

Error tracking and performance monitoring. Errors are tagged with your user ID (not email) for diagnosis. No recipe content is sent to Sentry.

Resend

Transactional email delivery (welcome emails, import failures, payment notifications). Stores your email address and email send history.

Data Retention

  • Recipes, ingredients, steps, tags: retained until you delete them or your account.
  • Import job logs: retained for approximately 30 days for audit and debugging purposes.
  • Usage events: retained for billing audit purposes for the life of your account.
  • Account data: retained until account deletion.

Your Rights

  • Access: You can view all your recipes and account data within the app at any time.
  • Export: Your recipes and account information are always visible to you in the app. If you would like a copy for your records, contact us at support@cooknookbook.com.
  • Deletion: You can delete your account at any time from the Settings page. This permanently removes all your recipes and personal data. Stripe subscription cancellation is handled automatically.
  • Correction: You can update your username, display name, and bio from the Settings page.

If you are located in the EU/EEA or California, data-protection laws such as the GDPR or CCPA may give you additional rights — including access, correction, deletion, or a copy of your data. You can exercise access, correction, and deletion yourself in the app (see above); for anything else, contact us at support@cooknookbook.com.

Cookies

Cook Nook uses a single session cookie set by Clerk for authentication purposes. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or tracking pixels.

Children

Cook Nook is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us at support@cooknookbook.com.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
